KUALA LUMPUR, 28 NOVEMBER 2012 – The University of Malaya in collaboration with the Malaysia Toray Science Foundation (MTSF) organized the Malaysia Toray Science Foundation Grant Research Symposium yesterday at the Auditorium, Research Management and Innovation Complex (RMIC), UM.
MTSF Grant Research Symposium brings together researchers from a spectrum of scientific research institutes and agencies that are able to provide a platform for them to discuss, deliberate and produce new ideas and recommendations on emerging researches and technologies. The exchange of knowledge and experience will bring research activities to greater heights on knowledge development and advanced innovation that will benefit the society and mankind, in general. 

This programme started in 1994.  Since then, the University of Malaya (UM) has a number of times been working together with MTSF in organising the symposium.  For this year, again, UM has been selected to co-organise the symposium.

According to Prof. Dr Awang Bulgiba Awang Mahmud, Acting Vice-Chancellor for UM “Having the researchers share their knowledge and research outcome this morning is timely for us since the Malaysian economy is now moving very quickly towards an innovation-led economy. Countries like Malaysia will now be investing not only in technology and development, but also in research and higher education.”

Among the projects to be presented are the Regulation of Cancer Stem Cell in Drug Resistant Breast Cancer by Herb-Drug-Treatment by Ms. Ho Wan Yong, Universiti Putra Malaysia and Development of Nanocatalyst for Direct Methonol Fuel Cell by Ms Sahriah Basri, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

Grantees of the MTSF Science & Technology Research Grant are required to complete and sign the General Grant Conditions that stipulate the general terms and conditions of the research grant.  Each year until the research is concluded, the Grantees are required to submit their annual reports, together with the up-to-date account of disbursement and utilisation of funds, jointly certified by the University/Institution and the Grantees.  Upon conclusion of the whole project, the Grantees are required to submit a final report and the statement of account to MTSF within 3 months thereof.

Subsequently, the Grantees are required to present their research report findings and share experiences at the MTSF Grant Research Symposium which are organised yearly for the benefit of the general public and the scientific community.
